To Boldly Nerd…

Video games, pen&paper RPGs and other nerdery

A new road or a secret gate

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.

I am borrowing from hobbitses, creatures with hairy feet, singing songs as they travel and discover new sights. They set out towards Rivendell, leaving their safe home in the Shire. Me, I am leaving the safety of my WoW blog, Tank like a Girl, to discover the big wide world beyond that game, living like a nerd. Thanks for joining me.

When my spouse and I moved to our current home, it was to a part of Germany where your license plate starts with NE. It was no question for us, we wanted to buy plates with RD on them. Ideally with something silly like 1337 or 404. Unfortunately the numbers weren’t available, so we went with the random 202. Still, proud nerds, and we call our car the Nerdmobile, currently in incarnation 2.0. Our living room wall is covered up with wall stickers from Space Invasion. We love books. We both love SF&F. I love computer games. My first serious passion in games was Ultima IV. I have played various pen&paper RPGs over the years, D&D, Shadowrun, World of Darkness, Star Wars, etc. I met my wife on a MUSH when we were 5,000 miles apart from each other. I have tons of American friends, from the various games we played together. I should be a card-carrying member of the Bioware fanclub. I play MMOs, not just WoW.

And now I am going to blog about it.

I will blog about all of the above, anything that will come to my mind. As what I am currently doing will vastly influence the content, here are things I currently spend my time with.

  • Currently reading: going to re-read all existing books of A Song of Ice and Fire, because I am so pumped for the TV show and the next book.
  • Currently playing: WoW, Rift, Dragon Age 2. The former on weekends, Rift during the week, and DA2 on my 2nd playthrough, whenever the mood hits me. Friendmancing Merrill this time. Ah, I shall have to post about that.

Regular posting will begin tomorrow, and I definitely hope to have a far more steady schedule than I ever had over at TlaG. 🙂

  1. Hurrah! And good luck!

  2. huzzah for morphing (kinda) blogs!

  3. Whoo! Kadomi’s new blog! 😀

  4. I have greatly enjoyed your Tanking blog and will miss that, but look forward to following you along this new chapter celebrating all things Nerdy (what a hoot). It will be interesting to compare reading lists. Song of Ice & Fire does seem like an awesome potential (I am anxious to see the portrayal of Jon Snow and the Wolf as well as Tyrion). If you are looking for some other fun reads I loved Scalzi’s “Old Man’s War” (awesome humor mixed in) and Marks’ “Dominant Species” for the sci-fi military realism. Good luck!

    • I will probably still post to the tanking blog, when something occurs to me (like the silly announcement about Call to Arms today), I just won’t feel pressured into being a perfect prot warrior resource, if that makes any sense.

Thanks for the recommendations, I will add both of those to my Goodreads bookshelf. 🙂

  5. Durr… I just found out about your blogs today. Yes, I’m slow and late.
So I’m looking at this with a laughing and a weeping eye: weeping because I probably missed the heyday of what looks like a fascinating blog (Tank like a Girl), and laughing, because I’m here for the start of a new era! Good luck with that!
(Plus, you seem to live less than an hour from me. That probably makes you the most “local” blog I’ve ever read!)

    • Oh, where are you? I am in Meerbusch. 🙂

      • (OK, I fail at replying, it seems, so you’ll find this text farther down the page again…)

Smack dab in the middle of Aachen. I generally don’t get up quite as north as Meerbusch, generally I only make it to Düsseldorf center every now and then. But still, an hour by car!

  6. I have given up waiting for the new ASOIAF book. It’s been 6 years. I have moved on. To be honest, after he ruined it in book three by killing off Tywin, I don’t think it’ll be any good.

Like the new blog. I’ll keep checking it. Nice to hear from you again.

    • Oh god, a Lannister fan. I am re-reading all books in preparation for the TV show and am really amazed at the ease of GRRM killing off characters. It’s so easy for him! But I do think the book’s actually coming this summer. I gave up on Wheel of Time back then, I am not ready to give up on ASOIAF yet.

      • I’m not a Lannister fan (although Jaime is a great character), it’s just that Tywin was the bad guy. Who’s the bad guy now? Stannis is too weird, Cersei is too incompetent, Littlefinger is a wimp…

Nah, he ruined it when he killed off the guy who was responsible for the Red Wedding.

Hmmm – perhaps I haven’t moved on after all.

        • Red wedding. So gruesome. The Rains of Castamere will never be the same again.

I really enjoyed the Jaime chapters, but Cersei was a big disappointment. I expected to find something redeeming about her, but I just didn’t.

I am counting on GRRM to still give us more terrible villains. July. Not that far away, really!

  7. @Kadomi – Smack dab in the middle of Aachen. I generally don’t get up quite as north as Meerbusch, generally I only make it to Düsseldorf center every now and then. But still, an hour by car!
